Threads Is Quietly Winning

Mobile social feed interface representing activity on Threads

Remember when Threads launched and everyone said it was dead after two weeks? I thought so too. The initial hype faded fast, people went back to X, and it felt like another Meta product that peaked on launch day.

I'm not so sure about that anymore.

I've been spending more time on Threads than X lately and I didn't even plan to. It just happened. The feed got better. The people I actually want to hear from moved there or started crossposting. And the vibe is different — less performative, less angry, more "people just saying stuff."

What actually changed

Meta did something smart: they stopped trying to make Threads into Twitter. Early on it felt like they were chasing feature parity — trending topics, hashtags, all the stuff X has. They pulled back on that and leaned into what was working, which is basically a text-based Instagram.

The algorithm figured out what I care about faster than X ever did. I don't know if that's because Meta has years of Instagram data to draw on or because their recommendation engine is just better right now, but in my experience the Threads feed is weirdly relevant. Less noise, more posts from people who have something to say.

The thing nobody wants to admit

X is exhausting. I'm not even making a political point — it's just tiring to use. Every scroll is outrage or dunking or someone trying to go viral. The energy is combative by default.

Threads is boring by comparison. And I mean that as a compliment. It's people sharing thoughts, asking questions, making jokes. Low-stakes posting. It feels like what people are nostalgic about when they talk about early Twitter, except it's happening on a Meta app, which is ironic.

Should you care?

If you're a creator or run a business, it's worth trying. From what I've seen, organic reach on Threads is significantly better than Instagram or X right now. Posts just get seen. That window won't last forever — it never does — but right now it might be the easiest place to build an audience from zero.

If you're just someone who likes scrolling, try it for a week. Follow the same people you follow on X and see which feed you prefer. I was surprised by my own answer.
